Google for Startups in partnership with Outbox Hub recently hosted a session on How to Become an Effective Founder and Protect Your Team from Distractions.

According to Harvard Business School, approximately 20% of enterprises fail during their first year. This indicates that after their first year, 80% of newly established enterprises are still operating. But over time, the failure rate rises. For instance, 65% of enterprises fail after ten years and around 45% after five.

The session delved into providing valuable insights and strategies shared by industry experts, Nielsimms Sangho and Joseph Ocailap. From understanding one’s business to building a strong team, the masterclass focused on the essential aspects of founding a successful startup.

At its onset, the masterclass was based on an intriguing analogy — learning to work like a plumber to comprehend your business to the dot. It stressed the significance of acquiring a deep understanding of every facet of one’s venture.

By familiarizing themselves with the intricacies of the business, founders can make informed decisions and effectively address challenges as they arise. This approach involves recognizing the expectations of team members and identifying the expertise required to solve problems efficiently.

“As a founder, you have to know who you need for your business to grow, you also need to calculate and know what their expectations are from you. Above all, remember that every time you are challenged, you are one person away from getting your problem solved” — Nielsimms Sangho.

Charles O’Reilly III and Michael L. Tushman suggested the three phases of disruptive innovation, idea generation, incubation, and scaling, in their book “Lead and Disrupt: How to Solve the Innovator’s Dilemma.” These phases offer a framework for comprehending the emergence and development of disruptive innovations within businesses.

Different entrepreneurs need to understand what stage of the disruptive journey they are on, the challenges they are exposed to, and what they can do to address them. In order to become an effective founder, startup owners need to;

Know Your Team and Their Expectations:

Successful founders recognize the importance of understanding who they need to propel their business forward. Calculating the team’s needs and knowing their expectations is essential for fostering a productive work environment. According to Nielsimms, when faced with challenges, founders are just one person away from finding a solution. Building a network of reliable individuals who can offer guidance and expertise plays a crucial role in overcoming obstacles.

Navigate the Startup Journey and Overcoming Challenges:

The session also shed light on the startup journey and the obstacles entrepreneurs are likely to encounter along the way. Founders were provided with guidance on how to approach these challenges and find ways to overcome them. The session emphasized the significance of developing a sound strategy and cultivating a supportive team.

Building a Strong Team:

Building a high-performing team is a pivotal factor in the success of any startup. The masterclass highlighted the importance of assembling a team that aligns with the company’s vision and values. Effective communication plays a vital role in team building. By clearly articulating their vision, founders can attract individuals who share their passion and can contribute to the collective growth of the startup. Cultivating a collaborative environment and nurturing strong relationships within the team are essential for achieving long-term success.

Becoming an effective founder requires a combination of skills, knowledge, and strategic decision-making. In collaboration with Outbox Hub, the Google for Startups session provided invaluable insights for aspiring founders, focusing on understanding one’s business, knowing the right team members, and overcoming challenges.

By adopting a plumber’s mindset, founders can gain a comprehensive understanding of their business, while building a team of individuals who share their vision drives success. The journey of founding a startup is undoubtedly challenging. Still, by leveraging the wisdom and guidance shared in this session, entrepreneurs can navigate the obstacles and emerge as effective founders who protect their teams from distractions, ensuring sustainable growth and success.

The majority of the entrepreneurs who attended the session confessed to finding it hard to run their businesses as they are the lifeline doing everything right from managing operations to managing the company’s finances, strategy, marketing, human resource, technology, and equipment.
